EduBlogs

Edublogs has some cool features that are easy to use, such as being able to password protect specific blog posts. Another nice thing is that there are a lot of different blog templates. The extra widgets (gadgets) that they have are useful for a basic blog, but lack the functionality of blogger. One of the major problems with Edublogs is its ads that can get in the way. Some of the features are only available to "Supporters", which you would have to pay for. There is also an upload limit of 20MB, so if there are a lot of pictures being uploaded space might be lost too quickly.

Overall I would say that this blogging system would be fine for Elementary students, but for anyone above that level I think that blogger is far superior.

LA & Social Studies Projects Using Local History Books

Several local history books are on the Internet and provide a good source for LA and Social Studies projects. for an example of a LA project see the K-12 LA Christmas Projects & Index post. Social Studies projects are especially relevant to grades 1, 2, 4 and 7 curriculum. The Faith & Tenacity Project demonstrates what can be done with digital files from a local history book. Using the PDF and Picture files stories about pictures can be created using a simple cut and paste method. Enlarged versions of the pictures are also available to look at details and links can be made to pictures of histrical buildings to show how they have changed.  Educational projects are also been done using the Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, Hills of Hope (West of Stony Plain) and St. Albert history books.

Towards Common Educational Values in Alberta

In this post we are attempting to compare values from various sources to come up with a common set of values, this could be used as part of the dialogue on education in the province but is not officially part of that dialogue at present. To initiate the dialogue we are developing links to values as posted on school websites. You can add your links using the name/url identification option when posting a comment to the post.  Other comments related to common values are welcome.
